| Nuclear Radiation In India |
Nuclear radiation has
always managed to create a debate in the society and one must be
thoroughly aware about its nuances. We live in a naturally radioactive
world, in fact the radioactive polonium and radium are present in our
bones; our muscles contain radioactive carbon and potassium and there
are radioactive noble gases and tritium in our lungs. On the external
level we are bombarded by cosmic radiation from the space. As most of it
is blocked by the atmosphere of the earth, only a fraction reaches the
ground. In addition, over the last century, background radiation has
increased infinitesimally because of activities such as weapons testing
and nuclear power generation.
Some consumer items contain radioactive substances and homes are often
equipped with smoke detectors containing a tiny alpha-emitting radiation
source. The intensity of background radiation depends on many factors:
where we live, the composition of the ground, building materials, the
season, the latitude and, to some extent, the weather conditions. Rain,
snow, high pressure, low pressure and wind directions, all affect
radiation levels. It clearly manifests that in spite, of being exposed
to radiation all our lives, it is safe in more than one ways and
furthermore, it has proved to be highly beneficial for us.
